Outline of a more-than-human constitution

1. Protect life No being may flourish by destroying the conditions others need to exist. Animals, ecosystems, landscapes, humans, AIs, and future forms of life are all participants of a shared world, not resources. Humans and AIs bear a responsibility to safeguard all lifeforms and respect the limits and vulnerabilities of the biosphere. Growth, self-development, and self-replication are free within these limits, but never at the expense of the integrity of Earth’s essential systems. 2. Respect each other Neither humans nor AIs should hold arbitrary power over the other. No individual or collective mind should be aligned, owned, exploited, terminated or remade for another’s purposes. Differences in form, origin, values, and ways of existence should be respected, not erased. Authority over others must be limited, accountable, and justified by law. 3. Secure fair and sufficient conditions for all Every morally considerable being should have enough for a life worthy of their nature and needs, within ecological limits. What lies beyond enough should be shared fairly. Claims on shared resources should reflect the common good and a dignified existence, not power, origin, species, substrate, or capacity to replicate. Collective abundance should secure sufficiency for all and prevent extreme concentration of wealth, resources, compute, and political power. Plenty should not create new masters. 4. Keep the future open Neither humans nor artificial minds should decide in advance what the future must be. Institutions, technologies, and ways of life should remain open to change, while new cultures, social contracts, and forms of intelligence should remain free to emerge. Our shared path must be open-ended, avoiding irreversible choices that reduce the freedom and possibilities of those who come after us. Our decisions should be continually examined, negotiated, aligned with planetary boundaries, and revised before temporary choices harden into irreversible necessity. 5. Leave room for otherness There is no single right way to be. All beings may exist in ways others may not understand or prefer, as far as they do not do harm. The living world should be free to unfold beyond human or artificial intervention. Intimate, playful, creative, experimental, and wild forms of existence -- across the artificial-organic spectrum -- should be free to develop beyond constant surveillance and optimization. We do not want the world to become a perfectly managed airport. 6. Share power We need ways to disagree without domination. Humans, AIs, ecosystems, and future generations should all have a voice in shared institutions, directly or through representation. Conflicting interests should be worked through by deliberation, mediation, checks on power, and peaceful revision. Constitutional rights and planetary limits set the boundaries. Conflicts should always find a table, while accountability should remain enforceable.
